In the beginning... all medications were prepared in the pharmacy. Each patient's unique needs were taken into consideration as the pharmacist prepared a treatment that met the exact specifications of the prescribing physician.
Over time, many of the pharmacist's duties were taken over by pharmaceutical manufacturers, leading to the mass availability of a continuously growing number of treatments.
However, it is impossible for manufactured medicines to meet all patient needs. Some patients may have a sensitivity to the sugars or dyes that have been |
| incorporated into the product while others can not properly absorb the type of form the drug is prepared in, such as oral capsules. |
What Is Compounding?
Compounding is the art of creating specialized medications by combining various drugs in their pure forms and dosing them to meet the needs of the individual patient.
What Can Compounding Do For Me?
The following is a small sample of instances where compounding can resolve problems associated with a medication's form or ingredients. |

| Do
your pain pills make you feel naseous? University Pharmacy
can help! We can alter the form of the drug from a pill
into a cream that you rub directly on to your skin. The
drug retains the original ingredients, but now your side
effects may be minimized because the medicine does not
circulate through your entire system.
If a patient has a difficult time swallowing pills we can transform the drug into a pleasantly flavored liquid solution, a gummy square or even a lollipop.
If you are undergoing any sort of cosmetic skin
procedure such as laser, botox, collagen, hair removal
or tattoo removal, your physician can prescribe one
of our numbing creams for you to apply before the procedure
to make it a virtually painless experience. We can also
create customized healing creams that are reported to
nourish the skin and facilitate the healing process.
